Land Building in the Delta of the Mississippi River: Is it Feasible?
Kim, W., D. Mohrig, R. Twilley, C. Paola, & G. Parker. 2008.
Using a mechanistically based numerical model, this work shows that controlled avulsions of the river below New Orleans can build significant new land & help reverse this deterioration. Using a range of inputs spanning plausible rates of subsidence, sea-level rise, & sediment supply, the model predicts that ~700 to 1220 km2 of new land could be built over the span of a century.
