Grand Challenges in Coastal Resiliency I (Presentation)
Transforming Coastal Inundation Modeling to Public Security
A Grand Challenge workshop was recently held on the LSU campus. The workshop focused on improving local emergency operations & regional planning by addressing the needs of decision support personnel, current modeling/research capabilities, interfacing support tools with decision makers, & data needs to enhance modeling-decision support tools. An Uncertainty Analysis framework for the CLEAR Ecosystem Model: Using Subprovince 1 as Test Domain & Skill assessment (Report)
CLEAR Vol IV 2008
This report advances our analysis of model uncertainty associated with the calibration & use of null models for forecasting changes to surface water salinity in a region East of the Mississippi River delta plain, including the Lake Pontchartrain watershed & Caernarvon-Breton Sound
Assessment of Integrated Hydrodynamic & Transport for Long-term Predictions: FVCOM & Water Quality Modeling of the Pontchartrain Estuary (Report)
CLEAR Vol IV, Chapter 11 2008
This report describes the development of FVCOM (a 3-D model) for the Pontchartrain Estuary (Subprovinces 1 and 5) that is capable of a long-term mass conservative simulation of salinities. This report also describes the development of a 1-D tidal, salinity & water quality model that analyzes the general effects of freshwater diversions on the water quality of the Pontchartrain Estuary over a 17-year period.
Land Building in the Delta of the Mississippi River: Is it Feasible? (Report)
Kim, W., D. Mohrig, R. Twilley, C. Paola, & G. Parker. 2008.
Using a mechanistically based numerical model, this work shows that controlled avulsions of the river below New Orleans can build significant new land & help reverse this deterioration. Using a range of inputs spanning plausible rates of subsidence, sea-level rise, & sediment supply, the model predicts that ~700 to 1220 km2 of new land could be built over the span of a century.
Sediment Elevation & Plant Community Change During Rapid Delta Growth (Poster)
G.O. Holm, Bevington A., Twilley R., & Sasser C.
This poster highlights the synthesis of historical & current vegetation & sedimentation change in the Atchafalaya & Wax Lake deltas, as well as the potential for incorporating these data into the CLEAR landscape change modeling efforts.
Land Area Change in Coastal Louisiana: A Multidecadal Perspective (from 1956 - 2006) (Poster)
Barras, J.A., J.C. Bernier, & R.A. Morton - USGS 2008
This map represents work done by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) to analyze changes in the configuration of land & water in coastal Louisiana by using a sequential series of 14 data sets summarizing land & water areas from 1956 to 2006. THis map accompanies the 2008 USGS Land Area Change pamphlet.
Land Area Change in Coastal Louisiana: A Multidecadal Perspective (from 1956 - 2006) (Report)
Barras, J.A., J.C. Bernier, & R.A. Morton - USGS 2008
This pamphlet hightlights the work that U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) did to analyze changes in the configuration of land & water in coastal Louisiana by using a sequential series of 14 data sets summarizing land & water areas from 1956 to 2006.
Response of Salinity in Barataria Basin to Alternative 3 Freshwater Diversions (Report)
CLEAR Vol IV 2008
This report examines the effect of different pulsing regimes on surface water salinity in the Barataria Basin using a 1-D box model.
A Two Dimensional Vertically Integrated Hydrodynamic & Transport Model for Long Time Scale Simulations (Report)
CLEAR Vol IV 2008
This report details the development of a vertically averaged 2-D, coupled hydrodynamic / transport model. This model is used to assess the impact of landscape change on the hydrology & ecology of Louisiana wetlands.
Visualization of Model Output: CLEAR MapServer & Google Maps API (Report)
CLEAR Vol IV 2008
This report describes the details of two web-based visualization applications developed by the CLEAR Program.
